Still working to change trapping regulations

By John Reynolds, Merrifield, MN.

The legislative session has passed and again nothing was done to protect your dog from recklessly set body-grip traps and snares. The DFL leadership has proven no more interested in protecting your dog than the GOP.

After an ineffective bill passed through the GOP-controlled Legislature in 2012, the DNR recorded nine dog deaths that fall and then stopped recording. The DNR now ignores its own records and claims we don't know if the new regulations protect dogs. Same with some legislators and the trappers' lobby.

Here is the only fact that matters. The same body-grip trap and snare sets that have killed our dogs for decades are still legal. No one can dispute it.

Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping MN has tried to get reasonable regulations on body-grip traps and snares, but every attempt was met with no from the trappers' lobby and legislators who claim to support hunters (but ironically not their dogs).

Let's bring Minnesota's trapping regulations into the 21st century. How fair is it that a trapper can come on your land without your permission, kill your dog, and then walk away? How fair is that a trapper can put a body-grip trap in your driveway culvert, kill your dog, and then walk away?
