Send a letter to your newspaper

With trapping season starting in late October, we need to alert hunters and dog owners about the danger lying hidden in our woods and fields.

The best way to do that is to write a letter to the editor of your local paper. If you need some ideas, here is a sample letter:

Trapping season is just around the corner, and with it comes a danger that most people aren't aware exists. The danger can be hidden in the grass, in the ditch, in a box or even in your driveway culvert.

That danger is the body grip trap. The trap is designed to kill animals like raccoon, fisher and bobcat, and it works very well. The problem comes when the trap is set where dogs can find it, because the trap will kill them as quickly as it kills a raccoon.

Each fall and winter, dozens of MN dogs are killed in body grip traps that were set on the ground, baited with meat, or hidden in weeds along game trails.

Because the legislature has so far failed to fix the problem, a nonprofit group called Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping MN has formed to change the way body grip traps are used, to prevent dogs from being killed in them. Trappers do not have to kill our dogs in order to trap. The solution is simple, and trappers in many other states and Canadian provinces are already using dog-safe methods.

You can read more about those solutions on the group's website at http://www.doglovers4safetrappingmn.org

Please help us fix this problem.

Call or write your MN Legislators

Contact your legislators and ask them to support the regulation of lethal trapping & snaring to protect dogs.

Join our Paper MN Campaign

We are looking for volunteers to distribute our flyers as part of our Paper MN Campaign. They can be placed anywhere you think dog owners might see them. Hunter/hiking trail heads are good places for them. Bulletin boards, Vet clinics, outdoor retailers, and dog food stores are other good places to reach dog owners. Contact us and we will send you flyers, or download and print them from our Links & Resources page.
